Verify your business domain
Domain verification is a five-minute chore that quietly unlocks a surprising amount, and skipping it blocks features you will eventually want. It proves to Meta you control a website, and while the old Aggregated Event Measurement requirement was dropped in June 2025, it still gates link-ownership editing, Facebook Commerce, and several catalog features. Do it early and forget about it.
Three methods
DNS TXT record (recommended, most permanent): add a TXT record where the value is `facebook-domain-verification=<token>` to the root domain, wait for DNS propagation, then click Verify in Business Settings → Brand Safety → Domains.
HTML file upload: upload the verification file to the website root.
Meta tag: paste a `<meta>` tag into the homepage `<head>`. Risky because themes or A/B testing tools that strip head tags will silently un-verify the domain.
What gets verified
Verification applies to the primary domain, the effective top-level domain plus one (e.g., `mybrand.com`, not `shop.mybrand.com` or `www.mybrand.com`).
Only a Business Portfolio Admin (or someone with Developer access) can complete verification. The Portfolio that verifies first becomes the controlling Portfolio for that domain.
When you need it
Editing link previews (Open Graph metadata override). Preventing other accounts from claiming your domain. Facebook Shops and Commerce. Some Marketplace integrations.
What changed in June 2025: Meta removed the 8-event AEM cap and eliminated manual event prioritization. Domain verification is no longer required for AEM; it is required only for the cases above.
Common issues
Apex-domain TXT records can be rejected by some DNS providers. Older GoDaddy panels often require the '@' host symbol or a registrar workaround.
If a previous agency verified the domain in their Portfolio, you must request transfer or have them remove it before re-verifying in yours.
