Install the Meta Pixel
Run Meta ads without the Pixel and you are flying blind while paying full fare. The Pixel is the snippet that watches what people do on your site (page views, add-to-cart, purchase) and reports it back, powering measurement, retargeting, and optimization. Since iOS 14.5's App Tracking Transparency in April 2021 gutted browser tracking, it is only half the picture, which is why it lives paired with the Conversions API.
Install paths
Manual: paste the Pixel base code inside the `<head>` of every page, before the closing `</head>` tag. The base code auto-fires a PageView on load.
Google Tag Manager: use Meta's GTM Community Template, or a Custom HTML tag. Easier for marketers without dev access.
Platform integration: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, WordPress plugins. One-click install that bypasses the snippet entirely.
Verify the install
Install the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension. It verifies that the Pixel fires and shows event payloads in real time on any page.
Events Manager has a 'Test Events' tab that validates live events from a specific URL or test ID. It works for both Pixel and Conversions API.
Standard versus custom events
Standard events are Meta's predefined taxonomy: PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart, Purchase, Lead, and others. Standard events get first-class treatment in Ads Manager.
Custom events let you track anything standard events do not cover. Fire them with `fbq('trackCustom', 'EventName', {...})`. Custom events still build audiences but need a Custom Conversion mapping to count in the standard reporting columns.
Limits and gotchas
Installing both a platform integration (e.g., Shopify's native Facebook app) AND a manual Pixel causes double-counting. Pick one.
Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention caps JavaScript-set first-party cookies at 7 days, dropping to 24 hours if the user landed via a URL with `fbclid`.
iOS 14.5+ App Tracking Transparency cuts Pixel signal. Users who opt out cannot be matched to a Meta account, reducing tracked conversions by 15 to 30 percent and up to 50 percent on iOS-heavy audiences.
