GA4 AI Insights, explained
Google buried a genuinely useful AI advisor inside GA4, and most people never click it. Ask it a plain-English question about your traffic and it answers with a chart, a table, and a short written read. Here is what it does well, when to reach for it, and where it quietly falls short.
Where to find it
Open GA4. The Analytics Intelligence icon sits in the top-right corner of every report. Click it to open the side panel.
What it answers well
Comparison questions across time periods: how did organic traffic compare to last month. Single-property breakdowns: which pages drove the most conversions last week. Anomaly explanations: why did sessions drop on Tuesday.
The advisor reads your event data, your conversion definitions, and your audience definitions, then returns a chart with a short written summary.
What it cannot do
Cross-property analysis. Predictive forecasting beyond a 28-day window. Custom funnel definitions outside the standard report structure. Anything that needs SQL-level joins between datasets.
When to use AI Insights vs custom reports
Use AI Insights for one-off questions and exploratory analysis. Use custom reports for recurring dashboards your team checks every week.
Limits and gotchas
Answers slow down during peak hours. Custom dimensions defined in the last 24 hours may not be indexed yet. The advisor cannot answer questions about Universal Analytics data after deprecation.
