My build failed
A build that does not compile ships nothing. There is no half-built site: whatever was live before the build stays live, untouched. Here is how to read what happened and get the next build to land.
What a failed build means
Every change to a built site goes through a real compile. The new version only replaces the old one when a working bundle comes out the other end, so a failure costs you nothing except time: your visitors keep seeing the last good version the whole way through.
That also means you never need to rush a fix to protect a live site. The live site is already protected. A failed build is an inconvenience, not an outage.
Read the build history
Ask the assistant in the editor: "why did my build fail" or "show me my build history". It reads the build queue directly and reports each build's status (queued, building, succeeded, failed), why it ran (a new generation, an edit, or a manual run), when it started and finished, how long it took, and for a failure, the tail of the actual error.
The error tail usually names the exact thing that broke. You do not need to be able to read it yourself: the assistant will, and it will say in plain words what happened.
Run it again
The straightforward fix for a failed generation is to run it again. A second run picks different compositions and usually lands. Ask the assistant to run the build again and it will.
If the failure came from a code edit you made, the fix is the edit, not a rerun: correct the file and the site rebuilds itself.
Asked twice, got one build
One build waits in line per site at a time. If you ask for two changes in quick succession, you get one build, not two, and that is deliberate: the waiting build reads the newest files when it starts, so it carries both changes anyway. Nothing was lost, and there is nothing to redo.
If it keeps failing
Two failures in a row on the same request is worth a closer look. Read the error tail from the build history: if the same line breaks both times, the problem is in a specific file, and editing that file is the fix. If the errors differ, run it once more. And if a site has never finished a build, some things that depend on the built bundle, like exporting the site, will refuse until one build lands: the fix there is always the same, get one build through first.
