Variants and inventory
One product, several ways to buy it: sizes, session lengths, packages. Variants carry their own titles and prices, and stock is tracked per variant, so a sold-out medium never blocks the sale of a large.
What a variant is
A variant is one buyable version of a product with its own title and its own price. A t-shirt gets Small, Medium, and Large. A coaching product gets a 30-minute session and a 60-minute session. A service gets Basic and Premium packages. The buyer picks one at checkout and pays that variant's price.
Add variants when you create the product or any time after. You can also just tell the assistant, for example add a 75 dollar session to the NYC package, and it creates the variant for you.
Tracking stock
Inventory lives on the variant, not the product. Set a quantity on a variant and the shop counts down as orders come in. When the count hits zero, that variant sells out and buyers cannot purchase it.
You do not have to track stock at all. Leave the quantity off and the variant is untracked: it sells without limit, which is right for services, digital goods, and anything you never run out of.
If you want to keep counting stock but never block a sale, allow overselling on the variant. The count still runs, it just does not stop checkout when it passes zero.
Sold out versus untracked
These two states look similar in a list but behave opposite at checkout, so keep them straight. Sold out means the quantity is exactly zero: the variant exists, buyers can see it, and nobody can buy it. Untracked means there is no quantity at all: the variant sells forever and no count exists.
To mark something sold out on purpose, set its quantity to zero. To lift any limit, remove the quantity. Setting a quantity of zero when you meant to stop tracking is the most common mix-up, and it silently turns off sales.
When it does not work
A variant sells past its stock: either overselling is allowed on it or the variant is untracked. Set a real quantity and turn overselling off.
A variant shows sold out and you do not know why: its quantity is zero. Set the number you actually have and it goes back on sale.
You restocked but sales did not resume: the new quantity has to land on the right variant. Stock is per variant, so updating Small does nothing for Medium.
You want to stop tracking a variant entirely: clear its quantity rather than setting a big number. Untracked means no count to maintain.
