Chat limits and fair use
Credits are the real ceiling on AI work, but chat also carries a simple fair-use limit. Here is what it is, why you will rarely meet it, and what to do when you brush against it.
The limits
Chat allows 100 messages a day on Free and 300 a day on Pro, counted on a rolling 24-hour window rather than a calendar day. On top of that sits a per-minute burst guard, an abuse limit that stops floods of messages fired faster than any person types.
Credits are the real ceiling
The rate limits exist to keep the platform honest, not to meter your work. Credits already do the metering: every chat message, build, and generation draws from the same wallet, so in normal use your credits run out long before the message count does.
If you are planning capacity, plan around credits and ignore the message counts.
The soft spend ceiling
Behind the scenes, every model call goes through a router that picks the cheapest model trusted with that class of work and escalates to a stronger one only when the first result is unusable.
Each workspace has a soft monthly model-spend ceiling, and going over it never cuts anyone off. The router simply stops escalating to more expensive models and keeps working on the cheapest capable one. Nobody is ever told they must upgrade to keep chatting.
When a message will not send
Hit the daily limit: because the window rolls over 24 hours, capacity returns gradually as your older messages age out, no midnight reset to wait for.
Tripped the burst guard: you sent messages too fast for a minute. Pause briefly and continue, nothing is lost.
Out of credits rather than out of messages: that is a different stop with a different fix. Your sites stay live and your data is untouched, fresh daily credits land at midnight UTC, and the Buy credits dialog on /app/billing refills you in a minute.
